Goalkeeper David de Gea has hailed Manchester United’s supporters for providing the energy the players needed to secure Saturday’s last-gasp 1-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford.
United, who had beaten West Ham at the London Stadium back in September as a result of late drama, sealed all three points in the third and final minute of second half injury time, courtesy of Marcus Rashford’s predatory instincts.
The United academy graduate, who had stepped off the bench just past the hour mark, found himself in the right place at the right time to tap home Edinson Cavani’s low cross, sparking wild and jubilant scenes, both on the pitch and in the stands.
The win lifted United above West Ham and into the top-four for the first time since October, and De Gea, who had a relatively quiet afternoon between the sticks, believes the support from the stands in the closing stages provided United with the platform that they needed.
“[The fans] keep pushing the team,” De Gea told MUTV. “They keep shouting and that gave us a bit more energy at the end of the game.
“They were great for the whole game, and they deserved the win.”
As outlined above, a second consecutive three-point haul lifted United up into the top-four, strengthening their chances of securing a place in the Champions League next season.
The United goalkeeper continued: “It is a massive goal and a massive win for us.
“We trust in ourselves and fight until the end, and we scored a beautiful goal.”
The victory also marked a fifth Premier League clean sheet of the season for United and De Gea, meaning the Spaniard now hopes that he and his team-mates can begin to increase that tally.
“Keeping a clean sheet was massive for us,” De Gea added. “We didn’t concede many chances today and we controlled the game very well.
“We controlled the game from the beginning, and I was feeling the game was there for us.
“Hopefully the game gives us more confidence, more trust in ourselves.
“From today, let’s see if we can win more games in a row, control games more and keep more clean sheets.”
