New Year’s Day 2022 supermarket opening times including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Aldi



After a week of nothing but festive food and drink many shoppers might be looking to replenish their fridge and restock their kitchen cupboards on New Year’s Day.

January 1 falls on a Saturday but many supermarkets and shops are running at reduced hours or closing entirely to give their staff a well-deserved break.

Aldi is one of the supermarkets that will be closed on New Year’s Day while Waitrose has confirmed it will only have a small numbers of shops open.

So whether you shop at Aldi, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons or Sainsbury’s, here’s what you need to know about New Year’s Day opening times. While below you will find the general opening hours for each store it’s always best to check your local for varying trading times.

Aldi – closed

The supermarket will be shutting its doors on New Year’s Day so do not head there.

It was also closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day but will resume normal hours from Monday, January 3.

Aldi said: “Aldi will close its stores as usual on Christmas Day and will once again keep all stores shut on Boxing Day as a thank you to colleagues and in recognition of their hard work throughout the year. The supermarket has always remained closed on Boxing Day ever since opening in the UK over 30 years ago.

“The majority of stores will also be open from 8am until 8pm in between Christmas and New Year and until 6pm on New Year’s Eve to help shoppers get everything they need to ring in 2022.”

Asda – open

The store is open on New Year’s Day.

Asda has asked customers to check its store locator for specific opening times, which you can find here.

A quick search though seems to suggest reduced hours on New Year’s Day with stores in Cwmbran, Newport and Cardiff operating between 10am and 5pm.

Morrisons – open

The majority of Morrisons stores will be opening between 9am and 6pm on New Year’s Day although counters will be operating at reduced levels.

Sainsbury’s – open

On New Year’s Day Sainsbury’s stores will be open although trading times can vary.

Sainsbury’s told us the majority of its stores will be from 8am and 8pm on January 1 but is advising customers check its store locator for the latest details in their area. You can find that here.

Tesco – open

While stores will vary in general the opening times for Tesco stores on New Year’s Day can be found below.

Tesco Extras, Superstores, and Metro stores in England and Wales will be open from 8am to 6pm.

Express stores are open 8am to 10pm while petrol stations open 7am to 7pm.

Waitrose – mostly closed

Most Waitrose shops will be closed on New Year’s Day with the exception of Welcome Break motorway service stations and Shell forecourts with some of those open 24 hours.

On New Year’s Day a small number of our shops will be open, with varying opening hours dependent on location, between 7am and 9pm.
